At The Table #1: Living for Christ on Campus

Welcome to our first segment of At the Table, where we have faith conversations that are honest, relatable and real.

This week, joining us at the table is Nerat Gyang, and we’re talking about being a Christian in a secular university.

Pull up a seat. The conversation starts now.

MEET ONE OF US:

My name is Nerat Gyang. I’m 23 years old, I’m from Plateau state, based in Lagos Nigeria. Studying medicine in Lead City University and I’m currently in my final year.

  1. What does being a “Christian” mean to you personally?

Nerat: Being a Christian, to me, means following Jesus’ teachings, living with purpose and having the fullness of His life.

2. Did your faith change in any way after entering university?

Nerat: My faith grew stronger in university through diverse perspectives.

3. What has been your biggest challenge as a Christian in a secular university?

Nerat: Balancing faith with differing views is tough; staying true is the challenge.

4. Have you ever felt pressured to compromise your faith? How did you handle it?

Nerat: I’ve definitely felt pressure, but I handled it by praying and leaning on my crew

5. How do you remain grounded when surrounded by different worldviews?

Nerat: Deciding on my own view through the word of God, prayer, bible study, and good people keeps me grounded.

6. What has university taught you about your relationship with God?

Nerat: Uni’s taught me that God works through everything and that I don’t have any other person, except God.

7. What scripture has anchored you during this season?

Nerat: Isaiah 40:31 & Isaiah 41:10 anchors me.

8. What advice would you give to freshers entering secular universities?

Nerat: Let there be conviction in your heart, decide in your heart that you will not defile yourself. Stay rooted in God’s word and connect with like-minded folks.

9. How can Christian students be bold without being judgmental?

Nerat: Be bold with kindness and respect, always know how Jesus would approach every situation, and do likewise.

Being a Christian in a secular university is not always easy but as we’ve seen, it is possible to stay rooted, grow stronger, and live boldly for Christ.

No matter where you find yourself; lecture halls, hostels, or conversations that challenge your beliefs, remember that God is with you, and your faith is not meant to be hidden, but lived.

You may not always have all the answers, but you can always stand firm in the One who does.

Thank you, Nerat, for joining us on the blog this week.
