There Is Grace For The Flawed

Because we hear the phrase “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” we can easily mistake these men for perfect people — God’s favourite righteous ones. But they were far from perfect.

Yes, Abraham had immense faith, but he still lied that Sarah was his sister twice to protect himself (Genesis 12:11–13; Genesis 20:2). Isaac later did the same thing in Genesis 26:7.

Isaac knew God’s prophecy in Genesis 25:23 — that the older would serve the younger — yet because Esau was his favourite son, he still tried to bless him above Jacob. This is not to excuse Rebekah’s schemes either.

Jacob may have been the most cunning of them all. He made his brother sell his birthright, stole his brother’s blessing, and deceived his father-in-law, among other things.

We won’t even begin to list the atrocities of his sons.

Yet, God never left this family. As sinful and flawed as they were, their sins were never greater than God’s love, and they never deterred His plans. God remained faithful and kept the promises He made to Abraham.

We see this pattern throughout the Bible. Even David — the apple of God’s eye, a man who worshipped God like no other — committed adultery and arranged the killing of a man. Still, he found grace.

Never believe that you are too far gone for God’s grace to reach you.

God’s story has always been one of grace, not perfection. He works through broken people, redeems flawed lives, and remains faithful even when we fall short. If God could remain committed to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David despite their failures, then His grace is more than sufficient for us today.
